A book filled Berkeley home

This project is quintessentially Berkeley: a home that’s a little bit quirky, full of charm, and undeniably grand. The architecture offers layers of character, and the homeowners—both deeply immersed in the book world—have filled it with soul, stories, and shelves upon shelves of beloved volumes.

We were brought in to help refine and elevate the space while preserving its well-worn warmth. Our work included designing new custom millwork to expand the already impressive collection of bookcases, creating moments that feel both purposeful and organic to the home.

Some unusual renovation choices made by previous owners left behind a few awkward corners and underutilized spaces. Instead of dramatic overhauls, we leaned into these quirks with strategic decoration—proof that subtle design moves can still yield meaningful change. In several rooms, we embraced a moody palette to create depth, intimacy, and contrast—balancing the sunlit charm of the more open areas with cozy, dramatic spaces that invite you to linger.

This collaboration was a joy from beginning to end. The finished home feels thoughtful and layered—a true reflection of the homeowners’ passions, their lifestyle, and the unmistakable spirit of Berkeley.
